Customer Portal integration using One Time Password (OTP)

The Customer Portal supports seamless integration with external platforms using a One Time Password (OTP) login flow.

This allows customers who are already authenticated in your own application, portal, or website to access the Customer Portal without entering separate login credentials.

In addition, the portal offers configuration options to:

  • Prevent customers from editing company and employee information within the portal.
  • Redirect users to a custom location after logging out.

How the OTP login flow works

The typical flow is as follows:

  1. A customer logs in to your own application or platform.
  2. Your system generates a One Time Password (OTP) through our Partner API.
  3. The customer is redirected to the Customer Portal using the OTP.
  4. The Customer Portal validates the OTP.
  5. The customer is automatically signed in and can immediately access the portal.

This creates a seamless experience and eliminates the need for customers to maintain separate login credentials for the Customer Portal.

Important: Do not create employee accounts for OTP users

When using the OTP login flow, it is recommended not to create an employee account for the customer. Creating an Employee account automatically sends an email with a temporary password to the customer.

In an OTP-based integration, these emails are unnecessary and may confuse customers, as authentication is already handled by your own platform.

Recommended approach

Instead of creating an Employee account:

  • Create the OTP for the customer's remote.
  • Redirect the customer to the Customer Portal using the generated OTP.
  • Authentication remains fully controlled by your own platform.

Keeping customer data management in your own platform

Many partners who implement OTP login also prefer to manage customer and user information within their own systems. To support this, there is a setting in de branding to avoid this:

When enabled:

  • Customers can no longer edit company information.
  • Customers can no longer edit employee information.

Configuring the Logout URL

The Customer Portal also supports a configurable Logout URL. This allows users to be redirected to a location of your choice after signing out. You can found this setting in de branding settings:

Example

A customer:

  1. Logs in through your platform.
  2. Accesses the Customer Portal via OTP.
  3. Clicks Logout in the Customer Portal.

Instead of remaining on the portal login page, the user is automatically redirected to the configured Logout URL.

Recommended Configuration

For the best integrated experience:

✅ Use OTP authentication for customer access.

✅ Generate OTPs for the customer's remote.

✅ Do not create Employee accounts solely for OTP users.

✅ Enable Restrict customers from editing company and employee data if customer administration is managed externally.

✅ Configure a Logout URL that redirects users back to your own platform.
